Spring River in far northeastern Oklahoma is one of two rivers that merge
to form Grand River, which is the beginning of Grand Lake. Spring River Canoe
Trails, at the upper end of Spring River as it enters Oklahoma, sits a few miles
upstream from its sister park, Twin Bridges State Park. (Twin Bridges State Park
sits at the junction of the Neosho River and Spring River where they form Grand
River.) Originally land belonging to the Wyandotte Indians, this area became
private farm land until acquired by the Grand River Dam Authority, and then sold
to the state of Oklahoma for park development in 1980. Spring River is known for
some of the best fishing in Oklahoma, and includes such species as large mouth
bass, spoonbill paddlefish (found in Spring), white bass, hybrid stripers,
crappie, channel and flathead catfish, and occasionally good-sized walleye.
Besides fishing, recreational activities also include boating, canoeing,
picnicking, and camping. Visitors will find 22 miles of canoe trails and two
separate camping areas with a total of 21 picnic tables, 2 group picnic
shelters, 2 comfort stations (1 with showers), a playground, one lighted and one
unlighted canoe ramp, and 38 primitive campsites for tent camping. More
campsites (some with RV hookups) can be found downstream at Twin Bridges State
Park; however, visitors to Spring River Canoe Trails will find a great place to
"rough it" and do some serious fishing, exploring, and canoeing.
In the far northeastern corner of Oklahoma, 6 miles east of Miami, with I-44 and
Hwy 10 to the south and US Hwys 66/69 on the west.
East of Miami on Hwy 10, then north, or west from Hwy 66/69, or north from I-44.
