Below Lake Altus-Lugert Dam
|
Discover the rugged beauty of Quartz Mountain Resort Park, one of Oklahoma's
original seven state parks. Adjacent to Lake Altus-Lugert, the park is surrounded
by the stark beauty of rough granite hills and outcroppings--remnants of the
Wichita Mountain Range--whose peaks once stood over 20,000 feet tall. The
park's fascinating geological history dating back millions of years provides a real
treat for hiking and geology enthusiasts--the highlight of which may be climbing
1,950 feet high. Excellent rock climbing, rappelling but bring your own
climbing and rappelling equipment. The park's rugged landscape is reflected in the
sparkling clear waters of Lake Altus-Lugert, a 6,260 acre haven for fishing, boating, and
water sports.
Quartz Mountain State Park is in a region of the state that has the
distinction of having been under several flags: It was Spanish property from the
late 1500's until included in the Louisiana Province of France; then it was sold to
the United States and after that claimed by Mexico; and then by the Republic of
Texas, until in 1896, it was decided that it belonged to the United States and
assigned to the Oklahoma Territory. A long list of famous names are associated
with the area including General Custer and Comanche Chief, Quannah Parker.
In
1927, a dam was built across the north branch of the Red River to provide a water
source for Altus, and the Civilian Conservation Corps completed area
development. Today, this 4,624 acre park is a very popular recreation destination,
offering visitors spectacular scenery, adventurous hiking opportunities, fishing
and water sports, swimming, picnicking, camping, paddle boating, canoeing,
miniature golf, off-road vehicle and motorcycling
opportunities, festivals, bazaars, performing arts programs, and 18 hole golf.
