Climbers' Group Saves
Baldy Point
4/25/01
For more than 30 years, rock climbers have
met exhilarating challenges on a treasure hidden in a southwestern Oklahoma
farmer's wheat field. Now, a group of climbing aficionados have made sure the
hill, called Baldy Point, is preserved for future generations of thrill seekers.
A non-profit organization raised the funds to buy the land that had been put
into trust after the farmer died and his remaining family moved away. The 60
acres were then donated to Quartz Mountain State Park. The area is regarded as
the best granite-face climbing surface in the region. Volunteers plan to add
hiking trails and other minor improvements in the near future. The site is
primarily day use only for activities such as climbing, hiking and environmental
education. Climbers will officially recognize the property transfer during a
ceremony on May 5 at 11 a.m. on site.
