The Southern Plains Indian Museum displays richly varied arts of western Oklahoma tribal peoples including the Kiowa, Comanche, Kiowa-Apache, Southern Cheyenne, Southern Arapaho, Wichita, Caddo, Delaware, and Ft. Still Apache. Their historic clothing, shields, weapons, baby carriers, and toys highlight the exhibits.

A series of promotional sales exhibitions introduces unsurpassed Contemporary American Indian arts and crafts by emerging artists and craftspersons.

The museum was founded in 1947-48 through Federal and Oklahoma State governments’ Cooperative

Located 1 block north of the Weatherford City hall on the corner of 5th & West Main Street which is on the old Route 66 highway through town. Our WOHC group maintains an old one room Schoolhouse- the Cedar School was moved into town & restored. It sits beside our research center. We rotate our displays 3 times during the year. In August we return to the old time schoolhouse, with early photos of area schools. The Cedar school students come back to town for their class reunion and attend the Hydro Free Fair. We have just added a new exhibit an "old Doctor's Office" for viewing. A Dr. Ellis Lamb who worked in nearby Clinton area and found his framed diploma's dating back to 1905 from Medicial School.  Our research center is open Tues. afternoons 2:00-4:00, Thur evenings 6:00-8:00 & Sat mornings.  We have over 30,000 obituaries filed by cemetery. We have over 800 rolls of microfilm covering many states and of course early Custer County records.

10:00-12:00 noon. The Schoolhouse is open to the public during our open hours with - free admission. Donations are always welcome.  Our Society is printing our 2nd Cemetery book, Gateways to the Past is over 500 pages of records of the county cemetery records with driving directions to each one & a fold out map showing the locations.

Museum collection includes farm tools, cameras, saddles, furniture, clothing, kitchen equipment, Indian paintings, pianos, early televisions, and much more. Industry exhibits and a church setting are also featured. Themes include Victorian, country/western, American Indian, architectural, and Main Street. See the Brick Walk of History, early day well cover (now a gazebo), and the beautiful water fountain at the entrance. Don't forget to visit the gift shop! From Hwy 11, go 1 mile S to 300 block. A county and area museum that tells the comprehensive history of Cimarron County. We have info that
includes dinosaurs, Plains Indian, Santa Fe Trail, Dust Bowl, Ranching; and several other interesting items
such as Cox Button Collection, Rhoton Bottle Collection, Rhoton Barbed Wire Collection; a restored 1917
REO Truck, a 1916 Dort Hearse; a 1941 Packard. We are adding an outdoor Windmill exhibit and future
plans include a half dugout. The entrance to our museum is a house designed by Oklahoma architect
Bruce Goff, and we have a new 1600 square foot main museum building. We are open all year, closed for
holidays. We do not charge, but take donations. We are located at 1300 N. Cimarron in Boise City or
HWY 287 north, on the edge of town, look for the giant Aptoasaurus iron sculpture.

Six museums with varied interests are located on the park grounds, including a one-room schoolhouse, veterans museum featuring uniforms from every war and conflict, Santa Fe Depot, 1908 log cabin, chapel and heirloom garden. The Roll One Room School House offers hands-on history lesson of 1910 for area fourth grade students in April, May and October. Visitors welcome at all times. Washita Battle Site

This national historic site marks the site of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer's 1868 early-morning attack on the Southern Cheyenne village of Chief Black Kettle. During the summer, ranger-led talks are available each weekend morning at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 and each afternoon at 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00, beginning and ending at the battlefield overlook on Hwy 47A. Programs may be available weekdays by advance request. Trail guides are available at the Black Kettle Museum in Cheyenne. A 1.5 mile self-guided trail is also available to visitors; proper shoes and clothing is advised. This site is a unit of the National Park Service.
