McGee Creek Reservoir is located about 15 miles
southeast of the city of Atoka in one of the state's most scenic areas. It
impounds the waters of McGee Creek in eastern Atoka County. Virtually all the
land surrounding the lake is covered with dense forest. Atoka County was
originally named Shappaway, but in 1885 was changed to Atoka. It was named for
Captain Atoka Ochlatubbe whose name is the Choctaw word, "hitako" or
Hetoka, meaning "ball ground." The area provides numerous
water-oriented recreation opportunities for the visitor. The lower part of the
reservoir was cleared for the protection of water skiers, boaters and fishermen.
The upper portion and forested areas provide scenic enjoyment and good hunting.
The Bugaboo Canyon Natural Scenic Area, covering 8,900 acres, lies to the
northeast, providing hunting, fishing and nature studies. A 10,000 acre wildlife
management area lies north and northwest of the reservoir. Shoreline length-64
miles.
McGee Creek State Park has eight Lake
Huts located near the Potapo Campground. Although rustic in
appearance, these huts provide shelter from the elements that Mother Nature can
unleash whether it is rain or the summer heat. The huts are approximately 12
feet in width and 24 feet in length, and each has a screened in back porch
overlooking the lake. The accommodations include one set of bunk beds with
mattresses, table, chairs, fireplace and air conditioning. There are no
linens. Water and a bar-b-que grill are available outside each hut.
A restroom with showers is within walking distance. These
huts are available for reservation through the park office or by calling
580-889-5822 during normal business hours. All major credit cards
accepted.
McGee
Creek Reservoir has 64 miles of shoreline, and a mean depth of 27.3 feet. McGee
Creek Dam is in the Red River Basin on McGee Creek, in Atoka Country about 12
miles SE of the town of Atoka.
