Two and a half miles northeast of Heavener,off Highway 59 and US Highway 270.

At 1000 feet above the city of Heavener, the park offers a panoramic view of the valley below and is a great spot to witness spectacular sunsets. Heavener State Park is a day use only park for picnicking (2 group shelters), hiking and exploring, and educational programs about the Runestone. (Overnight camping can be found in nearby Lake Wister State Park.) Trails include the Runestone Interpretative Trail, located near the information center/gift shop. This 200 yard trail takes visitors through the unique natural historic site; the Nature Trail, an easy 1 mile loop which also begins near the information center; and the Cliff Side Trail, a one mile trail that follows the cliff tops from Group Shelter #2 near the overlook area, through the picnic area, along the cliffs above the Runestone, to an intersection with the Nature Trail, offering a great view overlooking the city of Heavener and Lake Wister. In addition to the park office and gift shop, the park offers an interpretative center with educational information, plenty of picnic tables, 2 comfort stations, and a playground making it a fun and interesting place to get away and explore for a day. Hours & Days of Operation:

Heavener State Park is a day-use only park offering group shelters for picnics, picnic tables, outdoor grills, comfort stations, amphitheater, playground, hiking, exploring, and educational programs about the Runestone. Overnight camping can be found in nearby Lake Wister State Park. The park offers a park office, gift shop and interpretative center with educational information.  In season: 8am - 7pm, 7 days a week. Off season: 8am - 5pm, 7 days a week. The comfort station in the picnic area closes from mid-November to March.

Price:

No charge to picnic or view the Runestone; group picnic shelters, with water, electricity, and grill may be rented.

The Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area(NRA) and six other designated areas in Oklahoma combine to offer visitors a full range of recreational, educational, and scenic opportunities on the western side of the forest. The NRA has more than 150 campsites, a 90-acre lake, an equestrian camp, a 45-mile stretch of the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, and many miles of equestrian, interpretive, and hiking trails. The 26,445-acre NRA lies on both sides of the Talimena Scenic Byway in Oklahoma.

Shuttles: Hiker shuttles are available from D&W Store (also known as Big Cedar Store, 918-651-3230), Big Cedar RV Park (918-651-3271) and Talking Talking Trees Campground (918-653-2187). Be sure to call ahead and make arrangement as neither is set up for drop in business.

Directions to Talimena State Park: Take US Hwy. 271 seven miles north east of Talihina OK. Turn right.
