Janene and Michelle go Deep Sea Fishing

Michelle and I both like to fish so we headed for the white beaches of Florida in October of 1997. My husband doesn't like sand and salt water so he wasn't interested in attending. (He is a bass fisherman) October is a great month to go as the temperature was perfect and we didn't lose one day due to weather. I have always loved to pier fish at Pensacola Beach and love the clear water and white sand. Storms have torn down the Pensacola and Destin piers, but there is one at Navarre and Ft. Walton is rebuilding their pier. You can still find plenty of places to fish. In fact, I like the panhandle of Florida better than Cancun. I also like it down around Ft. Meyers and it used to be good fishing down there. The beaches in southern Florida have now been consumed by people and condos, and fishing is just not what it used to be. We fished the bridges between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach, and the pier at Navarre. We then made one day of deep sea fishing and had a great time catching red snapper. October is a good month for king, red snapper and trigger fish and you don't have to go out 50 miles to get in them which is nice. I like riding in boats, but I had rather spend my time fishing. Michelle just has fun, whatever.

We went out and watched all of the boats come in the day before we went so we could see what captain was bringing in the biggest catches, and also see how many people got off of the boat sick. You can see, we really know how to plan our fun. We decided to go out on the Destin Princess a 65' catamaran. Michelle was afraid she might get sick, and I have been sick before and really didn't want to spend the day laying on a bench not moving my head and begging the captain to take me to land. It was also a new l .2 million dollar boat with airconditioning and had nice restrooms. You know, the little things a woman notices. Pretty, clean, and all that stuff. It was also a catamaran, which everyone told us rode smoother. We didn't see any people come off sick so that was the boat we chose. We had a great day fishing, caught a bunch of red snapper and the deck hands were polite and efficient. They really took good care of us. The snapper were a lot easier to catch than the trigger fish. They kept stealing my bait and I never did catch one of them although several of them were caught. We checked on all of the other boats as they came in, and several had good catches. The ride was pretty smooth considering we had 5 to 6 ft. seas. We neither one got sick. Whew! We are listing the several boats that came in with good catches. There are also many charter boats to choose from that will take just you up to a party of 6 or so.

The Destin Princess is coast guard approved for up to 49 passengers. At the helm we had Capt. Bob Wilniak who had 20 years experience in local waters. The boat was fast, clean, and air conditioned. You can fish all day, half day or take a Sunset Cruise.
