Broken Bow Lake is located in one of the state's most
beautiful settings. The 22-mile long lake lies in the
Ouachita Mountains of McCurtain County in southeastern
Oklahoma. Beavers Bend State Park, located along the
Mountain Fork River just below the dam, provides cabins and
may other recreational facilities.
More than 12,000 acres of land surrounding the lake are
open for hunting, with 5,420 acres designated as the Broken
Bow Public Hunting Area. The area is predominately forest,
providing habitat for deer, wild turkey, and squirrel. The
McCurtain County Wilderness Area, a 14,087 acres oak-pine
forest adjacent to and just northeast of the lake, was the
first land acquired by the State Department of Wildlife
Conservation. No hunting is permitted in this area and
public access is strictly regulated.
The lake's crystal clear waters provide one of the best
year-round fishing sports in Oklahoma. Fish species include
largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, sand bass, crappie,
channel catfish, flathead catfish, and various species of
sunfish. Trout fishing is available year-round in the lake's
tail waters.
FLW Outdoors Magazine named
Broken Bow Lake as one of its top bass fisheries in America! Part of what they wrote:
Broken Bow Lake Tucked neatly away in the
foothills of the majestic Ouachita Mountains of far
southeastern Oklahoma lies one of that state's best-kept
secrets: Broken Bow Lake. With its crystal-clear water
and numerous islands, the 14,200-acre gem is rapidly
becoming one of the better-known smallmouth-bass
fisheries in the region.
With the impoundment of the
Mountain Fork River, which is known for an abundant
population of native Ouachita-strain smallmouths, it was
merely a matter of time before this lake exploded into a
bronzeback angler's dream come true.
Broken Bow is one of Oklahoma's
deepest lakes, with some areas reaching 140 feet, and
its shoreline consists of mostly steep, rocky banks
cradling clean, clear water - the perfect recipe for
smallmouth bass to thrive and reproduce year after year.
The McCurtain
County area also offers other rivers, streams and lakes
offering unique fishing opportunities.
You’ll need more than a few trips here to explore them all!
