ALABASTER CAVERNS STATE PARK
Beginning Memorial Day weekend and lasting through Labor Day weekend there are
specific nature programs that people can check into. They include Lantern
Tours of the Cavern as well as viewing some enormous bat flights. Both of
these programs are limited in their size and do require pre-payment and
reservations.
The highlight of this unique 200-acre park is the 3/4-mile cavern formed of alabaster, a form of gypsum, making it the largest natural gypsum cave in the world open to the public. There are daily interpretive tours of the 50-degree cave where visitors can learn about the history of the cavern, see beautiful selenite formations, rare colors of alabaster, bats from five different species and the occasional mud-covered wild caver crawling out of one of the undeveloped caves. The park's gift shop is also an educational center with information on the history and geology of the area, along with souvenirs which include items made from area alabaster. The park has a trail system consisting mainly of 4 trails. Raptor's Roost trail, named for the birds of prey that can be seen as you walk along the rim of the canyon, is suited for hikers of all age. The more challenging trails, include Little Black Bear trail, Old Two Toes trail that crosses the canyon, and The Freedom Trail which is a 3/4 mile interpretative trail along the bottom of the canyon providing the best displays of flora and fauna. Horseshoe pit, volleyball court, camping areas, picnic tables, picnic shelters and group shelters with electricity, water and grills are available at the park. Camp sites are either semi-modern with electric and water, or without utilities.
Prices: Please check prices with park. Prices subject to change without notice. Average peak season camping fees range from $8 for primitive sites to $15 for semi-modern sites w/utilities (individual site sewage disposal not available). Discounts, # of people, season, site location, etc., may affect rates. Group picnic shelters are available for $30 per day.
We also offer some discounts for youth groups
with some restrictions, please have people call the park for more info.
